The following sound clips represent major song styles of kulintang music. Although the following names do refer to a particular song, one must keep in mind that there exist many variations of a song, and the following clips simply represent one version. Kulintang music is similar to jazz in that all song variations are based on an original melodic and rhythmic idea, but over the centuries kulintang players have created their own variations on the original theme. Also like jazz, the best variations are remembered and played by other musicians, and in turn become starting points for even more variations.

Binalig
Perhaps the most difficult song style of kulintang music, Binalig fuses complex melody variations with a technically challenging rhythmic motif. Ideally, this song style should be played at a fairly fast tempo, which only adds to its challenging aspect.

Tagonggo
The traditional accompaniment to the Maguindanao peoples' sword and shield dance, "Sagayan." Although Sagayan is now considered a form of entertainment to the Moslem people of Mindanao, it was originally a trance dance in which a spiritual healer went into battle with a spirit that had taken possession of a individual, in an effort to free that person from the possession. Tagonggo then, can be said to have pre-Islamic spiritual and sacred roots, as it was a song played to help a healer get into his healing trance.

Sinulog a Kamamatuan
A song style primarily played by the Maguindanao people, Sinulog a Kamamatuan stresses the importance of melody. All variations of this song are really demonstrations of how creative kulintang players have been in regards to melody. Also known as "Old Style" because it represents a style that was more popular with the older generations, this song has traditionally been a specialty of female kulintang players.
